Each September, the Missouri General Assembly returns to the Capitol to review any legislation that was met with the governor’s veto pen the previous summer. And, this year will be no different. My colleagues and I will make the trek back to the Capitol City for not only veto session, but an extra session as well.
This year, six bills were rejected by the executive branch. When we are in Jefferson City, the sponsors of those measures will determine if it is necessary to override the veto now, or if this can wait until new legislation is introduced next year. The Missouri Constitution requires a two-thirds majority of both the Missouri Senate and the Missouri House of Representatives to override any of the governor’s vetoes.
Lawmakers have also been called back to Jefferson City for an extraordinary legislative session. The governor is asking us to respond to a recent decision handed down by the Missouri Supreme Court. Justices have ruled the purchaser of a vehicle can only reduce tax liability when selling one vehicle they already own. Before, the Missouri Department of Revenue would calculate the taxable cost of a new vehicle when someone would sell more than one vehicle at once. The governor wants lawmakers to allow credits for multiple vehicles.
