The Missouri Senate Minute for Jan. 22: Public Safety

Public safety remains a top issue for Missouri lawmakers. Part of the picture includes sentencing requirements. Tuesday afternoon saw the Missouri Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee hear Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer of Parkville present Senate Bill 601, which would modify the punishment for the offense of armed criminal action…

“For some, the answer is stricter gun laws,” Sen. Luetkemeyer said. “But, those sweeping proposals fail to distinguish between law-abiding gun owners — who represent the vast majority of citizens in our state — and those who use guns to commit crimes.”

During discussion, Sen. Karla May of St. Louis says she believes this legislation would take Missouri down a familiar path…

“All of these are drivers,” Sen. May said, “And then, at the same time, you don’t want to pass any legislation that forces private industries to hire people regardless if they had a felony or not.”

Committee action has not yet been taken on Senate Bill 601.
