Sen. Hegeman’s Weekly Column, for the Week of June 8: Standing with Our Allies

During the past legislative session, my colleagues and I passed legislation that I believe takes a firm stand against discrimination in public contracting. In my opinion, this legislation sends a strong message to one of our country’s greatest allies that we support them and are beside them every step of the way.

Senate Bill 739 creates the “Anti-Discrimination Against Israel Act.” This comes on the heels of the United States acting on decades of promises made to Israel and finally opening the U.S. embassy in Israel’s capital. Since 1948, I believe our nation has stood with Israel. Now, this legislation wants to make sure these are not empty words; rather, a path forward, together.

The “Anti-Discrimination Against Israel Act” prohibits public entities from entering into certain contracts with a company, unless the agreement includes written certification the company is not currently engaged in, nor would engage in, a boycott of goods or services from Israel, or any company, person or entity, doing business with or in Israel. Missouri has a long-standing partnership with Israel, and I believe this legislation will strengthen this alliance.

I urge the governor to sign SB 739, a simple, commonsense approach to keeping a bond between our state and our strong ally not only in existence, but make it stronger and show the world we are serious about our commitment to our global partner.
