JEFFERSON CITY —State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, R-Parkville, selected a drawing by Anthony Torri, a 10th grade student from Park Hill High School, to represent the 34th Senatorial District in the 2019 Missouri Senate Art Exhibit competition.
The winning entry from the 34th Senatorial District depicts a U.S. serviceman embracing a woman at the center of the image, with various images surrounding the couple. The drawing was submitted by Anthony’s art teacher, Katharine Padberg.
“I congratulate Anthony for his impressive artwork. It was difficult to select a winner from all the excellent entries submitted from schools in Platte and Buchanan counties, but I finally chose this piece for the emotional connection I felt while viewing it,” Sen. Luetkemeyer said. “The drawing evokes the strong connections to home, family and friends a soldier feels as he says goodbye to those he loves.”
Each year since 2014, students from schools in each of Missouri’s senatorial districts have submitted artwork for the annual competition, which is co-sponsored by the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education and the Missouri Art Education Association.
Finalists receive a medal recognizing their success in the Missouri Senate Art Exhibit competition. The winning artwork from each of the 34 districts has been displayed in a passageway that connects the Capitol building with the Senate parking garage, where it can be enjoyed by lawmakers and staff throughout 2019.
