Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer’s Legislative Column for Jan. 14, 2019

A Whirlwind Day in the Missouri Senate

With my first day as a Missouri state senator under my belt, I want to express my appreciation to the citizens of Platte and Buchanan counties for the trust they’ve placed in me. It is a great honor to represent the 34th Senatorial District at the State Capitol. I am grateful for the opportunity.

It was great honor to take the oath of office to become a Missouri State Senator.

Wednesday, Jan. 9, was a whirlwind day here in Jefferson City. The big moment came at noon when I joined the other newly elected and reelected senators in taking our oaths of office. I cannot adequately describe the feeling of standing in the grand Senate chamber as a newly-sworn senator.

The Senate’s first session of 2019 preceded in orderly fashion. We elected a new president pro tem and 233 pre-filed bills and 20 resolutions were read into the record. Already, it’s clear we have our work cut out for us this year.

The rest of opening day was spent greeting friends, constituents and other well-wishers and getting to know my colleagues. The Capitol was buzzing with activity as we prepared for the Legislative Ball. The formal dance is an open-invitation event and people from all walks of life attend. Each of Missouri’s elected representatives and senators were afforded the opportunity to participate in the Grand March down the Rotunda’s grand staircase with their family and guests. It was a great thrill.

For the past few months, my life has been focused on reaching this wonderful day I just experienced. It’s been a great experience getting to this point. But now I must focus on confirming your trust. The next four and a half months will bring new wonders and insights. I hope to spend each of those days being the best state senator for the 34th District that I can possibly be.

I took a moment to pose for a family group photo on opening day.
