Sen. Hegeman Sponsors Appointee to Northwest Board of Regents

JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Dan Hegeman, R-Cosby, sponsored Mel Tjeerdsma of Maryville as a member of the Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents. The Missouri Senate Gubernatorial Appointments Committee discussed his appointment on Sept. 12 during the extraordinary legislative session.

“It is always a pleasure to see such talented people take time out of their busy lives to volunteer for the various boards and commissions in our state,” Sen. Hegeman said. “Mel has always done great work for Northwest Missouri State University for many years, and I am thankful to see him continue to serve this wonderful institution.”

Tjeerdsma, a 1977 graduate of Northwest Missouri State, served as their head football coach from 1994 through 2010, and later as athletic director from 2013 through 2018. Under his leadership as head coach, the Bearcats won three national championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December, 2018. His current term on the board of regents will expire in 2025.

“Thanks again to Mel for his years of dedication and continued focus on making Northwest a better place going forward,” Sen. Hegeman said. “It was an honor to sponsor him before the Gubernatorial Appointments Committee and help spread the word about the fine institution we have in the great northwest part of our state.”

On Sept. 13, the full Missouri Senate approved Tjeerdsma’s confirmation for his term on the Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents.
