Sen. Caleb Rowden’s Legislative Column for the Week of Jan. 28, 2019

Committee hearings continued this week throughout the Missouri Senate. A majority of the proposed bills filed for the 2019 legislative session have been assigned to committees for discussion and debate. Once a bill has been assigned to committee, a legislative hearing can take place regarding the proposal. During the hearing, the sponsor of the proposal has the opportunity to discuss the merits of their legislation before the members of the committee. The committee portion of the legislative process also provides members of the public the opportunity to weigh in on the proposed legislation and express their support or opposition to the proposal. If a bill receives approval from its assigned committee, it then moves to the floor of the Missouri Senate for consideration by each senator.

On Wednesday, Jan. 31, the chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court gave the annual State of the Judiciary Address. This address updated Missourians on the judicial system and the challenges it faces. It also provided the Missouri General Assembly the opportunity to learn ways in which we can assist the judiciary.
