Sen. Caleb Rowden’s Column for the Week of Jan. 7, 2019

Senator Caleb Rowden’s Column for the Week of Jan. 7, 2019

The First Regular Session of the 100th General Assembly began at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 9. It is a privilege to represent the citizens of the 19th Senatorial District, and I am excited to continue to represent your views and concerns in the Missouri Senate. Following November’s election, my colleagues in the Missouri Senate’s Majority Caucus elected me to serve as the Missouri Senate’s majority floor leader. This is a tremendous honor, and I look forward to working with my colleagues, on both sides of the aisle, to strengthen our state and work toward a bright and prosperous future for all Missourians.

Members of the Boone County Fire Department present the colors during the first day of the legislative session.

On the first day of session, nine newly-elected senators took the oath of office and were sworn in to represent their respective districts in the Missouri Senate. During the day’s events, we were honored to have the Boone County Fire Department present the colors as we recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Their presence reminds us that we are here to serve the citizens of our great state. I would also like to thank the members of Jefferson City’s Helias High School Choir for singing the National Anthem. Both of these groups added to the grandeur of the day’s events, and it was a wonderful way to begin the legislative session.

Senator Caleb Rowden is joined by his wife Aubrey and his children Willem and Adele during the Grand March.

Later Wednesday evening, the Legislative Ball was held in the State Capitol. To begin the evening’s festivities, each senator and representative participates in the Grand March. During the march, each lawmaker’s name is announced as they proceed down the rotunda’s grand staircase. This tradition is a great way to introduce new legislators to the public and recognize returning legislators for their continued dedication to public service. The evening provides an excellent opportunity for lawmakers and their families to meet and interact with each of their colleagues. The Grand March also provided an excellent opportunity for me to introduce the newest member of my family to my colleagues, my daughter Adele. The day was eventful, and I am excited to begin the 2019 legislative session. Each and every day is an opportunity to make our state a better place for all Missourians. While we all might not agree on every issue, each of my colleagues and I are committed to moving our great state forward.

As we begin another legislative session, I am committed to serving you in the Missouri Senate.
