Senator Jamilah Nasheed Proposes Transition Committee for St. Louis Public Schools
Jefferson City, Mo. – State Senator Jamilah Nasheed (D-St. Louis) presented Senate Concurrent Resolution 29 for consideration before the Missouri Senate’s Rules, Joint Rules, Resolutions and Ethics Committee. The proposal would create the Joint Committee on the Transition of the St. Louis Public School District. The joint committee would facilitate the school district’s move back under the control of an elected school board. Since 2007, the St. Louis Public School District has been under the administration of a three-member appointed Special Administrative Board (SAB).
“The committee that I am proposing is a necessary step on the path of putting an elected school board back in charge of St. Louis Public Schools,” said Sen. Nasheed. “State statute requires we take this step and I am confident this resolution will receive bipartisan support. Test scores in the district have improved and progress has been made. It’s now time to return local control to the district and allow community leaders and parents to take charge of their children’s education.”
If approved, the joint committee would be comprised of five members from both the Missouri Senate and the Missouri House of Representatives, and include the members of the SAB and the elected school board.
