Sen. Dave Schatz’s Column for Jan. 18

Schatz- Column banner - 021215VeteransGuidePart of my job as your Senator is to help ensure my constituents have access to important resources. That is why my office offers a variety of publications, both online and through the mail. Typically, we send out annual newsletters with legislative updates, surveys seeking your opinions and directories that provide you with valuable resources. Currently, my staff is working on a conservation guide, which ultimately will help outdoor enthusiasts be able to better navigate all the public fishing and hunting areas in the 26th District. This week, however, I would like to talk about the Missouri Veteran’s Commission’s 2017-2018 Veteran’s Benefit Guide.

The 91-page, 2017-2018 Veteran’s Benefit Guide has a comprehensive list of programs and services specific to veterans. Everything from job training, listing of veteran’s homes, homeless benefits, military liaisons, veteran’s award programs are included in this guide.

There are nearly 488,220 veterans in our state and only 21,000 receive services from the division of Workforce Development. If you are a veteran or if you know a veteran who could benefit from life-saving services, job training programs or are just seeking more information, please take a moment to access the guide and see what is available.

Currently, the guide (web address: www.mvc.dps.mo.gov/docs/veterans-benefits-guide.pdf) is available online. However, my staff and I are looking into ways to mail it to veterans in our area. If you would like a Veteran’s Benefit Guide and are unable to access it online, feel free to contact my staff and we will make sure you get a copy.

We owe so much to the men and women who have fought for our freedoms. I think letting veterans know what benefits they are eligible for is the least we can do.

Thank you for reading this weekly column. Please contact my office at (573) 751-3678 if you have any questions.
