Investigative Committee Releases First Report as Missouri Senate Moves Forward with the Budget

Legislative News

This week, the Missouri House of Representatives’ Special Investigative Committee released its first report concerning the allegations against the governor. Their task was to conduct a fair, thorough and timely investigation regarding the allegations. I believe this was done, unfortunately, the governor’s testimony was missing as he refused several requests to answer questions and to present his side of the case.

It is important to note that the Investigative Committee requested, and was granted, an extended deadline to continue gathering information about several different allegations concerning the governor. The Legislature’s constitutional responsibility in these matters is serious and is not taken lightly by members of the Missouri Senate or House of Representatives.

In local news, a former mining operation in Madison County will re-open as a cobalt mine. This site holds an estimated 35-million pounds of cobalt, making it one of the largest reserves in North America. I had the opportunity to participate in the planning process for this project and believe it will provide several great opportunities in our local economy. The new mine will employ more than 250 permanent jobs in addition to dozens of construction and environmental remediation jobs. The demand for cobalt is increasing because of its use in electric vehicles and in high performance batteries. This new operation will provide an economic boost in Madison County and the surrounding areas, and I was pleased to be a part of the team that worked together to move the project forward.

The most important constitutional responsibility of the General Assembly is to pass a balanced budget each year. The Missouri Senate Appropriations Committee has been working through the budget proposed by the House of Representatives and has also heard testimony from various state agencies. The Appropriations Committee’s recommended budget will be debated on the Senate floor next week. I look forward to discussing the final product with my colleagues as we work to craft a fiscally responsible budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
