Celebrating Dad

This Sunday, June 18, is Father’s Day, the day we set aside each year for the specific purpose of celebrating fatherhood and recognizing all the dads, stepdads, uncles, granddads and paternal figures in our lives. Although Father’s Day was first celebrated in the state of Washington in 1910, it didn’t become a nationwide holiday until 1972 — almost 60 years after Mother’s Day was made an official holiday.

While Father’s Day is only 45 years old, the impact fathers can have on the lives of their children can last a lifetime. They set examples for us and care for us. They help teach us right from wrong and what it means to be responsible. It is for all these reasons and countless more that we express our love and gratitude on Father’s Day.

This Father’s Day, if you’re fortunate enough to enjoy time with your family, please take a moment to remember all the dads and sons and daughters who won’t be able to do the same. As a veteran who’s served overseas, I know what it’s like to miss spending holidays with loved ones. As the father of two sons, I’m always reminded on Father’s Day of the dads who don’t get to celebrate with their children, most especially those who can’t due to military service or because they’ve made the ultimate sacrifice.

No matter how you choose to celebrate your dad this weekend, relish the time you get to spend together and give thanks that you’re able to do so. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Father’s Day weekend.
