Senator Bob Onder’s Legislative Report for the Week of Sept. 25, 2017

One of the hidden treasures of our region is the Hawthorn Leadership School for Girls in the City of St. Louis, the first public all-girls charter school in the state. I recently had the pleasure of touring the school, visiting with staff and students.

Hawthorn faculty and staff provide middle and high school girls a quality college preparatory education with a particular focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). The education and instruction being given to these girls will serve them well beyond their years at Hawthorn. With an education focused on science, technology, engineering and math, these young women will have every opportunity to succeed in our fast-changing, technology-influenced society. At Hawthorn, teachers utilize project-based learning, which helps emphasize problem solving, team work and real world use of skills and knowledge learned in the classroom.

The school originally opened for sixth and seventh grade girls in 2015. In three short years since it was opened, the school is fully enrolled with 172 students in grades six through eight. The very first high school freshmen class has 40 students enrolled, and by the year 2020 administrators believe the school will be fully enrolled with students in grades six through 12.

I was impressed during my time at the school. The hardworking administrators and teachers are not simply working to educate children, they are helping young women develop life skills that will reach far outside of academics.
