Workshop817One of my favorite things about being a Senator in the 2nd Senatorial District is the wide variety of organizations and groups that serve our region. I am fortunate to get to spend time with some of these groups and in some of these facilities to see their passion and dedication first-hand. Recently, I spent some time with the employees and staff at BCI Packaging, formerly known as Boone Center– an organization that describes itself as a “unique social enterprise,” through its employment of nearly 250 adults with disabilities.  Such enterprises are often known as “sheltered workshops.”  I had a chance to visit with the center’s CEO, Tony Spielberg, and program director Katie Jones, and witness their commitment to the great work of BCI.

Between two locations, in St. Peters and Moscow Mills, the employees package household cleaning items and more. They are also charged with loading pallets of everyday goods that each of us use. In one year alone, through hard work and perseverance, employees packaged and shipped more than 18 million pieces.

This business operates like any other – with one very unique twist – it allows adults with all types and levels of disabilities to enter the workforce. It boosts their self-esteem, dignity and gives them a purpose. Employees work at their own pace and ability level daily. Many of them eventually transition to employment in the community.  It is clear to any visitor BCI has a family-like atmosphere where laughter and comradery  make the days go by quickly as work is done with care, concern and accuracy.

I was very impressed by the atmosphere and mission of BCI Packaging. In 2015, 10.4 percent of Missouri’s population under the age of 65 had a disability.  As Missourians and good stewards of the gifts we have been given, we should all reach out to help organizations who fill this much-needed niche. If you are interested in learning more about the facility please reach out to them by calling, (636) 978-4300 or visiting their website at www.boonecenter.com.

Very Sincerely,

Robert F. (Bob) Onder
