Senator Kurt Schaefer Announces Recommendations from Sanctity of Life Committee

Jefferson City — State Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, released the Senate Interim Committee on the Sanctity of Life’s recommendations following its work during the past year. Sen. Schaefer says the committee hopes to continue its work through 2016. Unfortunately, the committee was not able to meet with representatives from Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri. It was also unable to meet with Dr. James Miller of Pathology Services, Inc.

“I am proud of the work done by the committee but there are questions that still need to be answered,” stated Sen. Schaefer. “Missourians deserve answers regarding the disposal of fetal remains and other Planned Parenthood related issues. I believe these individuals have those answers and need to be held accountable.”

In addition, the committee recommends initiating contempt proceedings against Mary Kogut of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri and against Dr. James Miller of Pathology Services, Inc. The committee issued subpoenas to both of these individuals and neither appeared before the committee.

“Both of these individuals contain information vital to the committee’s goal,” claimed Schaefer. “I am committed to using all options necessary to acquire the answers the committee is looking for.”

The committee held four hearings during the past year and met with a variety of individuals involved with Planned Parenthood and other groups associated with the organization. During the hearings, lawmakers received public testimony and developed recommendations for the Missouri Senate.
