Statement from Sen. Joseph Keaveny Regarding Earned Income Tax Legislation

JEFFERSON CITY — Senate Minority Floor Leader Joseph Keaveny, D-St. Louis, today issued the following statement relating to legislation filed, which would take away St. Louis’ and Kansas City’s right to impose their own earnings tax.

“Voter-enacted laws should not be changed at the whim of the Legislature. Moreover, when the issue is one of local control, it is prudent to have a sponsor from the locality at issue. Senate Bill 575 has neither a local sponsor, nor the backing of voters. The General Assembly did not impose an earning tax; the citizens did themselves.”

This legislation would no longer allow St. Louis or Kansas City to continue to impose an earnings tax by submitting the tax to the voters of the city.
