Senator Denny Hoskins Celebrates Signing of Senate Bills 39 & 49

JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Denny Hoskins, R-Warrensburg, is pleased to announce that the governor has signed two priority pieces of legislation designed to protect the women and children of Missouri. Senate Bill 39, which was co-sponsored by Sen. Hoskins and prohibits biological men from competing in sports designated for biological women in all K-12 and collegiate athletics, was signed by the governor on Wednesday.

“Our student athletes deserve a fair field of play when they participate in school sports,” said Sen. Hoskins. “It is my opinion that it is simply wrong for young women, who may have trained in their respective sports for years, to suddenly be asked to compete against biological men who are bigger, stronger and faster.”

Under SB 39, student athletes will only be allowed to participate in sports that correspond to the gender on their birth certificates. There are exceptions for biological girls to participate in boys’ sports when no program for girls is available.

Also signed by the governor on Wednesday was Senate Bill 49, the “Save Adolescents From Experimentation (SAFE) Act.”

“There is no better use of our time in Jefferson City than protecting the children of Missouri. Throughout the hearings and debate on Senate Bill 49, we heard from several people who shared their stories and regrets about going through these procedures as children,” said Sen. Hoskins. “The more we learned through this process, the more I felt it reinforced the need for safeguards to exist, so our future generations can be protected from extreme procedures before they are ready to make such life-altering decisions.”

Senate Bill 49 mirrors Sen. Hoskins’ Senate Bill 236. The bill prohibits health care providers from providing gender transition surgeries, cross-sex hormones and puberty-blocking drugs to anyone under the age of 18.

Both Senate Bills 39 and 49 will become law on August 28.
