HB 1668 Use of defibrillators by emergency personnel
Bill Summary
- Prepared by Senate Research -

SCS/HB 1668 - This act allows counties and municipalities to establish programs for the use of automatic external defibrillators (AED)by persons responding to emergencies.

Members of fire, police, ambulance service, emergency medical response agencies or trained first response agencies may utilize an AED once proficiency is achieved and acceptable CPR training is completed.

A person or entity who acquires an AED must notify the local emergency medical authorities of the location of the device. Additionally, the owners must ensure that users are adequately trained, the device is sufficiently maintained and that, upon use, the appropriate medical system is immediately alerted to the emergency situation. If the device is used outside of a health care facility, a physician must direct the use and manage the patient's care.

A trained user of an AED who renders emergency care in a reasonable and prudent manner is exempt from civil liability for any damages resulting from any care or treatment rendered. This liability exception does not affect claims brought pursuant to Chapters 537 and 538, RSMo.
