HB 1117 Allows cities to authorize local sales tax for law enforcement purposes
Bill Summary
- Prepared by Senate Research -

SCS/HB 1117 - This act allows the governing body of any city, with voter approval, to impose by ordinance a sales tax of up to one-half of one percent on all retail sales made within the city. Revenue from the sales tax will be deposited in the newly created City Law Enforcement Sales Tax Trust Fund and used to provide law enforcement services or to form and finance a regional jail district.

This act also prohibits private companies or individuals from operating private jails or correctional facilities in the future. This provision does not affect those companies that currently operate private jails and does not prohibit the state from contracting with private companies to provide facilities for specific programs. This portion of the act is identical to SB 503 (1998).
