Senator Nasheed Secures More Than $14 Million in Additional Funding for St. Louis
JEFFERSON CITY — With all of the news surrounding the governor and the Missouri General Assembly, State Sen. Nasheed was able to secure funding that will provide substantial benefits to local residents and organizations throughout the City of St. Louis. Senator Nasheed successfully worked to obtain more than $14 million in additional state funding for the City of St. Louis in the state’s 2019 operating budget, passed by the legislature this week. This is the tenth year that Sen. Nasheed has served on one of the committees determining the state’s budget.
Education was one of Sen. Nasheed’s top priorities, as she worked to increase funding for Missouri’s Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Her efforts helped acquire an additional $1.5 million for Harris-Stowe University. The new funding will be split evenly between core funding and building a new laboratory on campus.
“I am glad to see the General Assembly provide more funding to one of our state’s important HBCUs, which has been underfunded for far too long,” said Sen. Nasheed. “I’m not done fighting for more money for our school, but this is one step toward getting these funding levels where they need to be.”
In addition to Sen. Nasheed’s work to support HCBUs, she worked closely with members of the Missouri House of Representatives on other important funding items in the St. Louis area. This includes:
- Working with Rep. Karla May to secure $500,000 in funding for Behavior Health.
- Working with Rep. Cora Faith Walker to provide $400,000 in funding for crisis nursery programs.
- Working with Rep. Bruce Franks, Jr. to secure $5.5 million in funding for youth summer jobs programs in St. Louis.
Additionally, the 2019 state operating budget provides $400,000 for Mission St. Louis and $3 million for domestic violence, victims’ services and sexual assault evidence collection, testing and tracking, both priorities for Sen. Nasheed. A variety of other programs and projects in the St. Louis area, such as Midtown and post-partum substance abuse programs, will receive a total of $3 million in state funding as well.

Passing a balanced budget is our only constitutional requirement. I believe the budget process fundamentally defines and establishes our state’s priorities. This budget reflects, unequivocally, that supporting St. Louis and seeing it prosper is a priority. I’m proud to be part of the effort that made that a reality.”
