SB 520 – This act establishes physical education requirements for school districts beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Physical education class will be required for students in kindergarten through fifth grade and will include 150 minutes of movement each week as described in the act. Students will have the opportunity to learn individual health self-assessment skills and will be encouraged to improve and sustain healthy fitness levels. School districts will create community and business partnerships to provide resources to reward schools for improved health status. Annually, the Commissioner of Education will recognize students, schools, and school districts that have achieved improved fitness.

This act is similar to HB 1215 (2007) and a provision contained in SS/SB 291 (2009).
