Friends & Neighbors,

Home Buyout Program Gets Committee Hearing

For the past three years, the Legislature has declined to take radioactive waste contamination in St. Louis County seriously.  It took some time, but eventually I managed to have a committee hearing in the senate a couple of years ago.  This year, only three weeks into session, Senate Bill 600, creating the Hazardous Waste Home Acquisition Program, went before a senate committee. Consistent and deliberate conversations have brought this issue to the Senate’s attention, and my colleagues are taking radioactive waste contamination more seriously today.

I am working to have my full legislation package heard. Senate Bill 601 expands the definition of occupational diseases to include post-traumatic stress disorder for the purpose of workers' compensation.  This will provide protection to first responders, and acknowledges radiation disability as a potential cause.

Much work has gone into getting to this point, but we cannot let up.  Until our local, state and federal governments accept responsibility and take action, we will still have work to do.

You are speaking loud and clear on gun control!

I have been a longstanding supporter of limiting the access and use of guns in public places.  The current bills moving through the Legislature, which would allow conceal and carry on college campuses, are unacceptable and you and I know it. On Wednesday, we heard five hours of testimony and debate on the issue. Supporters argued that students should be able to protect themselves, however these testimonies came from a skewed perspective. Witnesses did not consider how individuals of a diverse culture might live in constant fear if guns were allowed on college campuses. As a supporter of higher education, I believe it is not our students' job to protect themselves with weapons, but to get an education -- an education that will teach a diverse student population about multiple perspectives, cultures and tolerance. I want to thank everyone who has so far contacted my office.  Your comments give me something to take to the Senate floor, and for that, I appreciate you.

Too many Missourians are comfortable carrying guns in places where few people live.  They have no idea what it is like when they come into densely populated areas such as St. Louis, only to have that gun stolen and end up in the hands of criminals.  This happens far too often.

We don’t need more guns in public places.  I will continue to be the voice of reason in the Senate and inform my colleagues what it’s really like to live in the urban and inner-suburban core of the state.

I support fully funding education…and you can too

Last week, I introduced Senate Joint Resolution 37, which would bring to the ballot the question of fully funding the education foundation formula.  We are short-changing our children $400 million a year in education while simultaneously passing huge tax breaks and incentives.  If the money is where the mouth is, then we’re paying for somebody else’s free lunch.

A good education should be a nonpolitical issue.  Every child deserves a quality education.  This is true for urban and rural children.  The people of Missouri should get an up or down vote on whether they want education to be the number one policy in the state, without legislative interference.  Look for this resolution.  If you don’t hear more about it, then I need to hear more from you.

Thank you,

I was excited to attend the grand opening of the wonderful new Bridgeton Recreation Center at 4201 Fee Fee Rd. in Bridgeton, Saturday, Jan. 23.

I visited with many St. Louisians gearing up for the presidential primaries.

I also visited a radioactive waste dump in Robertson, Mo. on Saturday.

On Saturday, I attended the Muhammed Mosque #28's 22nd Annual Saviour's Day Award Banquet, where I listened to special guest speaker Bro. Anthony Muhammed.

I was invited to the Bal Vihar Indian Republic Day Celebration at Ladue Middle School on Sunday, Jan. 24. I spoke about the lessons of Mahatma Gandhi, the importance of knowing the cultural history of all countries throughout the world and investing in our children.
