Legislative Column for the Week of Jan. 12, 2015
Sen. Wasson Returning as Financial and Governmental Organizations and Elections Committee Chair

Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey, R-St. Charles, submitted the remaining committee appointments on Monday, Jan. 12. I was honored to once again be named Chair of the Senate Financial and Governmental Organizations and Elections Committee, a position I have held since 2013.

The Financial and Governmental Organizations and Elections Committee is responsible for considering and reporting on bills and issues relating to financial institutions in the Show-Me State; election law; departments, boards, bureaus and commissions of state government; internal operation of state agencies; and the effect of federal legislation upon any state agency.

In addition, I am honored to be returning to the Senate Governmental Accountability and Fiscal Oversight Committee, which reviews legislation and matters relating to the application, administration, execution and effectiveness of all state laws and programs; the organization and operation of state agencies; all bills, except regular appropriation bills, that require new appropriations or expenditures of appropriated funds in excess of $100,000, or that reduce such funds by that amount; and other duties.

I will also be returning to the Senate Jobs, Economic Development and Local Government Committee, which reviews legislation relating to the promotion of economic development, the creation and retention of jobs, tourism and the promotion of tourism as a state industry, as well as other related issues.

Finally, I will be returning to the Senate Small Business, Insurance and Industry Committe, which is responsible for examining legislation relating to the ownership and operation of small businesses; different forms of insurance; labor management, fair employment standards, workers’ compensation and employment security within the state; and industrial development.
