Legislative Column for the Week of Jan. 5, 2015
2015 Legislative Session Begins

January in Jefferson City means the start of a new legislative session. On Wednesday, Jan. 7, the First Regular Session of the 98th General Assembly officially convened. As I begin my second and final term in the Missouri Senate, I’m just as determined and dedicated to serve the people of my district as I was on my first day in office.

I was one of 17 senators (six newly elected and 11 re-elected) who participated in the swearing-in ceremony. Administering the oaths of office was Chief Justice Mary R. Russell of the Supreme Court of Missouri. The pomp and circumstance kicked into high gear for the Grand March and Legislative Ball held in the Capitol Rotunda. Open to the public, the evening gave Missouri legislators the opportunity to enjoy the company of family, friends and colleagues, both new and old.

Because the legislative session only lasts five months, it is incredibly important that we take advantage of each and every day. As always, doing what’s in the best interest for the residents of the 20th District is my top priority. As I have in the past, I will continue supporting efforts to create a fiscally responsible budget; to strengthen our business climate and encourage workforce development; and to fight for quality education so that every child has the necessary tools to succeed.

I’m excited for the start of another session and all the opportunities it brings to meet and collaborate with so many fine people from across the state. I always welcome your input as I work to represent the citizens of our district in the Missouri Senate, and I will keep you updated each week on legislative events in the Capitol.
