Sen. Nasheed Calls on ‘Oath Keepers’
to Leave Ferguson

JEFFERSON CITY — State Senator Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis City, issued the following statement today regarding the group known as the ‘Oath Keepers’:

“It has come to my attention that an outside group from an organization known as the ‘Oath Keepers’ is brandishing weapons in the midst of an already tense situation in Ferguson. One can only assume that their objective is to escalate and intimidate.

"The situation on the ground in Ferguson remains tense and the last thing our community needs is added fuel to the fire.

“I condemn these inflammatory demonstrations in the strongest of terms. I call on these individuals to find a less threatening way of expressing themselves. Finally, I urge all demonstrators to continue pursuing nonviolent means of change as we work to heal our community.”

Sen. Nasheed represents Missouri's 5th Senatorial District in the City of St. Louis.  Her legislative work emphasizes education, civil rights, and the justice system. Last summer, Sen. Nasheed was active as a community leader following the tragic shooting death of Michael Brown.  She has emerged as an advocate for peaceful change in the St. Louis area.
