According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), one structure fire was reported in the United States every 66 seconds in 2012. Fires may start from a multitude of causes, such as faulty appliances, candles, smoking accidents, gas leaks, arson, or even lightning.

Fires caused 2,855 deaths in the United States in 2012, including 16,500 injuries and $12.4 billion in property damage.

With the coming of spring, high winds, warmer temperatures and dry conditions may also lead to fires in residential and wooded areas alike. As the weather gets warmer, we should take steps to increase awareness of the danger associated with fire. As Daylight Saving Time marked the time for you to change the batteries in your home smoke detectors, it should also serve as a reminder to start preparing a safety plan for your family in the event of a fire.

Every person in the household must be able to understand their escape plan. Draw the plan up based on the floor plan of your house and yard. Walk through the plan several times to make sure everyone knows their role in the event of as fire. Choose a meeting place outside the home, such as a mailbox or street sign, so family members can account for each other. Assign someone to assist infants, toddlers or residents of the home with mobility problems to ensure they get out safely, as well.  Once out, stay out. Make sure no one returns to the house under any circumstances. Inform the fire department if someone is missing.

I encourage all Missourians to get together with their families and prepare a fire escape plan. Instruct your children to know what to be aware of if a fire breaks out. Life is fragile and precious, and a little preparation will go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.
