Senator Jamilah Nasheed Appointed to Serve on Important Joint Committee

JEFFERSON CITY — Recently, Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, was appointed by Senate leadership to the Joint Committee on Governmental Accountability.

“I am honored to be a part of the committee that will review the handling of recent events in Ferguson,” said Sen. Nasheed. “I am proud to have the opportunity to hold our government accountable, not only for action during recent crises, but also for any funds allotted prior to any protests that were earmarked to help local minorities.”

The Joint Committee on Governmental Accountability is charged with a number of duties, including study and analysis of inefficiencies, fraud and misconduct in state government; determining from study and analysis the need for modification in statutory law, rules, or policies; and make recommendations to the General Assembly as necessary to reduce inefficiencies in state government. Joint committees are usually composed of seven senators and seven representatives, with chairmanship alternating between members of the two chambers.

“This committee is important and my appointment to it is timely. I am honored to continue to be the voice for the voiceless in the times in which we live. The General Assembly is poised to begin the 2015 legislative session on Jan. 7, 2015, and I look forward to meeting with my colleagues and working toward solutions to the systemic problems affecting our state,” said Sen. Nasheed.
