Caregiver Legislation Sponsored by
Sen. Jamilah Nasheed Signed by governor

JEFFERSON CITY — Yesterday (7-9), Senate Bill 532, brought forth by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, received the governor’s signature, expanding certain rights for relative caregivers in Missouri.

“These days, it is so essential that the role of caregiver be acknowledged and respected,” said Sen. Nasheed. “As many of our children are raised outside of the standard family unit, we have to ensure their medical and educational well-being in any way we can.”

SB 532 defines a relative caregiver as a competent adult who is related to the child in question by blood, marriage or adoption. The bill gives a relative caregiver the right to make medical and educational decisions for the child.

“I know first-hand the difficulties that can arise as a relative caregiver,” said Sen. Nasheed. “This legislation will go a long way to assist those who take on the role of relative caregiver is order to ensure a child’s safety and build a brighter and more solid future for all Missouri’s children.”

Senator Nasheed continued, “I would like to thank the governor for his attention to this topic and doing what is right for the children of this state and the people that care for them.”
