Senator Jamilah Nasheed Carves Out Protection Against Stolen Firearms in Gun Bill

JEFFERSON CITY — The controversial gun bill, Senate Bill 613, sponsored by Sen. Brian Nieves, R-Washington, which passed the Senate yesterday, contained a provision sponsored by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed that requires gun owners to report to authorities within 72 hours any stolen guns.

“This legislation will enable the police to have better information about stolen guns on the street,” said Sen. Nasheed. “It also impressed upon the public the importance of reporting stolen weapons.”

“I was pleased to work with Sen. Nasheed and was impressed with her legislative acumen and ability to influence legislation,” said Sen. Nieves. “I think this may be a first step toward the urban and rural areas coming together to protect the rights of gun owners, while also making sure citizens are protected from gun violence.”

“If two of the most controversial members of the Senate can reach common ground on such controversial legislation,” said Sen. Nasheed, “then I am optimistic that the spirit of bi-partisanship will prevail in this session.”
