Legislative Column for the Week of Dec.16, 2013
Merry Christmas...or Happy Holidays?

‘Tis the season, once again. And with every passing year, the Christmas season gets watered down in favor of ‘political correctness.’ Merchants don’t wish to alienate anyone with an open wallet, so we are wished “Happy Holidays” and put up “holiday lights” instead of “Merry Christmas.”

While most of us understand the story that is at the core of this holiday, we tend to get caught up in the commercial end of things. Shopping for that perfect gift, sending Christmas cards, attending family gatherings, decorating with lights and trees, cooking food and enjoying all manner of merriment all work to fill the Christmas season with joy. No other holiday brings such excitement for so many.

We must also be aware of the fact that Christmas can be very difficult for some people. Loneliness, the loss of a loved one or economic difficulties may contribute to a less-than-happy holiday. We should try to remember those as well, in our thoughts, prayers and especially our deeds. Take the time to call on a lonely neighbor, give to the charity of your choice, spread your blessings to others in some way this Christmas season.

My family and I do wish all my constituents a very merry Christmas and hope that the new year brings new opportunities and blessings. It is truly an honor to represent you here in Jefferson City, and I look forward to hearing from you as the next session is right around the corner!
