Legislative Column for the Week of July 22, 2013
Acreage Reporting Deadline Nears

Farmers and landowners have been given an additional 18 days to submit their acreage reports to their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office. The new deadline is Aug. 2. Accurate reports of acreage are necessary in order to determine eligibility for certain FSA programs.

The acreage reporting date for crop insurance, however, did not change, and expired on July 15. I recommend farmers contact their local insurance agent for questions about coverage or how to report a claim.

In addition, I encourage crop producers to sign up for the Direct and Counter-Cyclical Program (DCP) before the Aug. 2 deadline. Eligible participants receive standardized direct payments or counter-cyclical payments, depending on market prices.

For more information about the FSA and the various programs available to crop producers, please visit www.fsa.usda.gov or contact your local FSA office.
