I am pleased to announce the signing of several pieces of my legislation this week by the governor. The first two bills deal with protecting the rights of our active duty and veteran military service men and women. Making life a bit better for the members of our Armed Forces is always high on my priority list.
SB 106 modifies several provisions regarding members of the military and veterans. The bill will allow military training to count towards college credit if certain standards are met. In addition, the legislation will renew health-related licenses for Armed Forces members without cost if they expire while on active duty. Another provision of the bill will protect the rights of deployed military parents in child custody issues.
SB 186 authorizes funeral homes to release information to the Department of Veterans Affairs or other veterans’ service organizations in order to properly care for the remains of these honored military men and women, providing the option of a proper resting place and relieving the obligation of the funeral homes to keep the remains until claimed.
SB 230 establishes “Chloe’s Law,” which requires newborns in Missouri to be tested for congenital heart defects using a method called pulse oximetry. The law is named for a newborn Kansas City area patient, Chloe Manz, whose doctor discovered her heart condition nine hours after her birth. Chloe will turn 5 in November.
