Legislative Column for the Week of Feb. 18, 2013
Assisting Our Veterans

As most of you know, I am a strong proponent for the rights of our military veterans. I believe that those who serve our country deserve more than just respect. These courageous men and women keep our country safe, defend our borders, sacrifice time with their families and often wind up in life-threatening situations. We need to hold our veterans in high regard and ensure they have every advantage they need to succeed when they are on home soil.

With this in mind, two of the bills I filed this session are SB 106 and SB 110.

Senate Bill 106 would allow veterans to use training in certain military courses as credit towards seeking degrees in post-secondary educational institutions as long as the courses meet the academic requirements of the institution.

In addition, the members of the Armed Forces in health-related fields with professional licenses or certificates would have their licenses renewed while on active duty without having to pay the associated fees, as long as certain requirements are met.

Senate Bill 110 deals with child custody and visitation rights of deployed parents. The main component of the bill would prevent custody or visitation changes to their court orders until 90 days after their deployment ends. This would give them sufficient time to seek legal counsel in child custody/visitation proceedings.

Protecting rights of our veterans is one of my priorities here in Jefferson City. We should never forget how valuable these men and women are to the security of our nation.
