Senator Sifton Sworn in to First Term As Missouri Senator

JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Scott Sifton, D-Affton, now represents Missouri’s 1st Senatorial District, after having been sworn in to office at noon yesterday (1-9).

“It is an honor to serve our community. I look forward to serving the residents of south St. Louis County and the inner suburban ring these next four years,” Sen. Sifton said.

Senator Sifton was elected in November 2012 after having spent two years in the Missouri House of Representatives. He has already prefiled three bills for the upcoming legislative session:

  • Senate Bill 38, which would establish a lobbyist gift ban for the members of the General Assembly and their candidate committees;
  • Senate Bill 39, which would reauthorize the Missouri Homestead Preservation tax credit program, to help senior citizens with their property taxes; and
  • Senate Bill 40, which would prohibit insurers from imposing waiting periods for maternity benefits and require coverage to begin immediately from the effective date of the policy or plan.

“We have received our committee assignments, will soon start the process of hearing bills in committee and eventually debate them on the Senate floor,” Sen. Sifton said. “We have many important challenges ahead of us this year. Between now and the middle of May, legislators will decide on a budget for the next fiscal year and discuss issues that affect families throughout the Show-Me State. I look forward to the challenge and am ready to serve the citizens of the 1st Senatorial District.”

Senator Sifton has been named to serve on the following Missouri Senate committees:

  • Appropriations;
  • Veterans’ Affairs and Health;
  • Financial, Government Organizations and Elections; and
  • Ways and Means.
