Legislation Benefitting St. Louis School District Sponsored by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed Advances in the Senate

JEFFERSON CITY — Legislation sponsored by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, to streamline dismissal policies for teachers within the St. Louis School District received the Missouri Senate’s first-round approval today (3-13).  Another passing vote sends Senate Bill 125 to the House of Representatives for similar consideration.

This measure would add incompetency as grounds for dismissal for any educator, as well as reduce the waiting period between charges brought against a teacher and the final dismissal date from an entire semester to 30 days.

“There are many fine teachers in the St. Louis School District,” Sen. Nasheed stated. “The goal of this legislation is to ensure that effective teachers remain in their positions, while allowing struggling teachers to move on to new opportunities. This will also open the door to the potential for new teachers to blaze educational paths for our students.”
