DESCRIPTION

This proposed legislation would amend the definition of "supervision" as it relates to physician assistants in subsection 1 (8) of Section 334.735. The supervising physician no longer needs to be in the same office facility, but must be immediately available to the physician assistant either personally or via telecommunications. The physician assistant can practice within thirty miles by road of the supervising physician (fifty miles for designated health professional shortage areas).

In subsection 5, a master's degree in a health or medical science related field is added as an additional requirement for applicants who complete their physician assistant training after January 1, 2004.

Two new subsections have been added. Subsection 10 limits the number of licensed physician assistants under one supervising physician to three except physician assistant agreements of hospital employees. Subsection 11 requires a physician assistant to complete at least one month of practice with a supervising physician continuously present.

DESCRIPTION (continued)

This legislation is not federally mandated, would not duplicate any other program and would not require additional capital improvements or rental space.

This proposal would not affect Total State Revenues.
