Providing for Youth and Seniors
Hello from your favorite Senator Angela Mosley!
This past week I joined with several of my colleagues as the Joint Committee on Government Accountability met to discuss a tragedy that occurred within the state’s foster care system earlier this year. A young man in foster care was placed with caregivers who were not trained or licensed to deal with his medical conditions. Unfortunately, the young man passed away due to his medical conditions.
This situation fills me with grief and highlights the growing need for additional support and additional oversight for our foster care system. I know improvements can be made to support these most vulnerable young people and provide for their bright futures.
Here in our community, the St. Louis County Board of Elections needs election judges and managers for the Nov. 3 elections. Election judges help set up and manage polling locations that must be staffed by bi-partisan teams. There is also an opportunity for students to help through the High School Election Judge Program. This role would bolster their college applications or work resume. Aging Ahead, an organization focused on helping seniors, has announced a new Aging Ahead-Connect Virtual Senior Center for members of the community who receive meals from the organization. To learn more please contact their team at 636-207-4218. Sign-ups close on Aug. 31.
In addition, I’d like to take a moment to recognize Margi Valleroy who has devoted more than 39 years of service to Aging Ahead and to the communities they serve. I appreciate her compassion and wisdom in her role and wish her the best of luck as she retires.
Finally, I hope the start of school has been well received. This is a promising time as students get the chance to meet their new classmates and teachers. The brightness of youth and their potential always brings a smile to my face and hope to my heart. Enjoy the return to school!
