Democracy in Action
Hello from your favorite Senator Angela Mosley! This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Project Her Name Matters town hall. It was an honor to meet with panelist Alecia McCulley and discuss the ways in which I can assist this organization’s cause through legislation at the state level. Below are a few photos from the event.
I hope you were able to vote last Tuesday, Aug. 4, in the primary election. Missourians delivered a strong message regarding Amendment 4 and Amendment 5, rejecting both measures in every county. I am glad voters made their voices heard at the ballot box. That is what democracy is truly about.
I believe the initiative petition (IP) reform in Amendment 4 would have silenced too many Missourians’ voices on issues they deemed worthy to bring to the ballot. I was concerned that this measure could have diluted the voice of the people in Missouri’s large metro areas, such as our community.
Additionally, I believe the income tax reform measure found in Amendment 5 would have disproportionately impacted lower-income communities through the likely increased sales tax. I doubt this is the last we will hear of these issues and will continue to monitor other similar proposals in the coming legislative session.
It is hard to believe, but the start of the school year is right around the corner. I want to wish faculty, staff and students a successful and safe school year as they return to the classroom. If any class trips are planned to visit the State Capitol, please be sure to stop by my office!
