Raise your Voice
Hello from your favorite Senator Angela Mosley!
This past weekend I held my 17th Annual Community Resource Fair and Backpack Giveaway. It was a huge success with many members of the community receiving assistance and information. I am so thankful for everyone who came out to participate, those who volunteered their time and my staff who helped me organize the whole event. Without each and every one of you the event would not have been the same.
It has been an honor to help the community with this event year-in and year-out, and I look forward to what the future holds. Every step we can take to strengthen bonds within our community and lift those who need help should be taken. This is simply one of those steps.
Another step is having our communities’ voices heard. Next Tuesday, Aug. 4, is the primary election with many important issues on the ballot, including initiative petition (IP) reform found in Amendment 4 and the income tax reform measure found in Amendment 5.
I strongly believe Amendment 4 will silence the voice of the people on issues they deem important. This measure would require an initiative petition to receive not just over 50% of the vote across the state but in each of the eight congressional districts. This could dilute the voice of the people, especially those in our community and neighboring communities.
In addition, I believe Amendment 5 will push the burden of taxes onto the back of our community by ultimately requiring an increase in sales taxes. In addition, if passed, Amendment 5 would open the door for the Missouri Legislature to change the tax code without input from the people. Currently, the state constitution requires every state tax adjustment to be approved by a vote of the people.
I encourage you to go out and have your voice heard by voting in the August primary. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to my office.
