Senator Lewis' Domestic Violence Language Passes with Bipartisan Support

JEFFERSON CITY — Provisions from State Senator Patty Lewis’, D-Kansas City, Senate Bill 928 preventing domestic violence, have passed with bipartisan support after being included in House Bill 2637.

“Every Missourian deserves to be safe in their home and community,” said Sen. Lewis. “Unfortunately, too many of our friends and neighbors are unable to find this safety because they are the victims of domestic violence. That is why we worked so hard to pass this legislation: to prevent domestic violence, support survivors and ensure our laws reflect the realities victims face today.”

The provisions sponsored by Sen. Lewis included in the final version of HB 2637 will streamline the order of protection process to reduce the risk of additional violence against victims, law enforcement, prosecutors and court officials. This legislation also updates the legal definitions of assault and domestic violence to clear the way for more efficient prosecution. Additionally, this legislation modernizes Missouri law by including technology language to the definitions of stalking and harassing – this was a key recommendation of Missouri’s Stop Cyberstalking and Harassment Task Force.

For more than two decades, Sen. Lewis worked as a registered nurse in intensive care units and as an executive at a global health care information technology company. Upon taking the Oath of Office in January of 2025, Sen. Lewis became the only nurse to ever serve in the Missouri State Senate, bringing a unique perspective to the upper chamber on health care, one of the most important issues facing constituents.
