The Budget Passed the Senate

The budget bills have been passed by the Senate. The bills have since been in conference committee with the House of Representatives to discuss the changes. Next week is the final week before the May 8 deadline to pass a balanced budget.

Currently, the budget is balanced and smaller than last year with many crucial cuts. The operating budget for next year currently sits at around $48.8 billion which is about a billion dollars less than last year’s budget. Though some difficult decisions had to be made, there is a large amount of funding for education, government, various city improvements, agriculture and many other important projects and programs.

The Senate will continue to work on a number of budget bills that fund maintenance, repairs, capital renovations and statewide projects.

I am proud of the priority we have given the budget this year to ensure its timely passage, which ultimately speeds along all the legislative work in the General Assembly.
