Food is Medicine

Hello from your favorite Senator Angela Mosley!

This week two students came to shadow my work here in the Legislature. I was happy to show William Weiss and Jacob Hydar from Affton High School around the building and show them what we do throughout session to help Missourians.

In addition, I had the opportunity to present my Senate Bill 875 to the Senate Families, Seniors and Health Committee this past week. This bill would allow elderly, disabled and homeless individual to use their SNAP benefits at restaurants for a hot meal. Many of these individuals are unable to shop, store or cook due to their physical constraints or circumstances. This bill would help the most vulnerable in our community maintain their health. There is power in having a hot meal and everyone deserves one.

I also would have presented my Food is Medicine Act, Senate Bill 1499, to the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food Production and Outdoor Resources but the hearing was canceled. This bill is meant to move the focus of healthcare to what we consume. Doctors look at diet as one of the leading causes for health issues, often recommending diet changes after diagnosis. Diabetes and heart disease are just two examples of conditions that often come with modified diets. This bill aims to tackle the problem ahead of the diagnosis. This bill would encourage healthier eating by creating a nutrition program for MO HealthNet members. This change would help prevent the growth of these diseases rather than only addressing them after they are a problem. Not only would this provide nutrition services, but it would also lower the cost to the state and citizens as prevention is always preferable to treatment. I am hopeful it will be rescheduled as soon as possible.

Next week, I will present my Senate Bill 1652 to the Committee on Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety. This bill establishes the Office of Missing and Murdered African American Women and Girls. The goal of this office would be to investigate and help protect the women of our community by gathering and analyzing reports to determine what can be done to protect these pillars of our community. I look forward to presenting this bill next week.

If you have any questions or are interested in being a witness for one of my bills, please reach out to my office.
