Senator Steven Roberts’ Senior Tax Freeze Passes Senate, Heads to House

JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Senate has passed Senate Joint Resolution 21, sponsored by Sen. Steven Roberts, D-St. Louis, which would allow counties to freeze the assessed value of real property owned by certain senior citizens.

“Rapidly rising rents and home value prices have been an overwhelming burden for senior residents who have lived in their homes for decades, worked hard their entire lives and now find themselves going through economic hardships because their limited incomes do not allow them to keep up with skyrocketing property taxes,” Sen. Roberts said. “This legislation would allow people in my district and across the state to enjoy the fruits of their efforts and improve their communities.”

If approved by voters, Senate Joint Resolution 21 would allow counties to exempt taxpayers sixty-five or older from increases in the assessed value of their property. The bill now heads to the Missouri House of Representatives.
