SNAP Benefit Expansion Bill Passes Senate Progress and Development Committee

Spring has sprung in Missouri and I’d like to wish all of you a healthy and prosperous season as we enter this time of renewal and rebirth. For those of you with grade school-aged children, I hope they have safe and enjoyable spring breaks.

SNAP Restaurant Meals Program

It is with great joy that I announce Senate Bill 313 has made it out of committee. This is a bill I am proud to sponsor that if passed in the full Senate, would enable certain elderly, disabled and/or homeless Missourians eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to apply their SNAP benefits at restaurants and private establishments that contract with the Missouri Department of Social Services.

Seven states already have this Restaurant Meals Program, in accordance with federal law — including neighboring Illinois. It would be wonderful if Missouri could be the eighth state in the nation with this program as it would provide many Missourians with more options and access to hot food and ready-to-eat meals in our state.

Tax Exemption for Diapers

Senate Bill 73 would provide a sales tax exemption for diapers and feminine hygiene products (including tampons, pads, liners and cups). This would provide a substantial benefit to many Missourians who depend on these essential items. This bill, which enjoys bipartisan support, is on the calendar for perfection next week, and I am hopeful we can give this important proposal first round approval.

McCluer North High School Fine Arts Advocacy Day

Sen. Angela Walton Mosley and Rep. Jay Mosley welcome students from McCluer North High School to the State Capitol.

Representative Jay Mosley and I also had the pleasure of welcoming a group of students from McCluer North High School in Florissant for their advocacy day. The students were advocating for support of fine arts.

Senate Student Art Exhibit Winner

Congratulations to Jai’Lyne Figures of Glasgow Village Elementary School. She was the 13th Senatorial District art exhibit winner this year. Each year, the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education and the Missouri Art Education Association select a student’s artwork to represent each of the 34 state Senate districts.
