Judicial Privacy Act Passes Senate

I am proud to say Senate Bill 72, the “Judicial Privacy Act,” was passed by the Senate this week. This legislation prohibits any government agency, person or business from disclosing the personal information of a judicial officer. This proposal is similar to and complementary of a federal law to protect federal judges, and we need to extend those same protections to our state judicial officers.

There are countless stories of threats being made against judges across the country and, sadly, in our state as well. A few judges shared their personal stories during the committee hearing for this bill, and it is imperative we extend the same federal protections to our state judges. We need to ensure our judges and prosecuting attorneys can fulfill the duties of their office without intimidation or fear of retaliation. This bill has been sent to the Missouri House of Representatives, and I am hopeful this measure will cross the legislative finish line.

Last week, I was proud to co-sponsor Senate Remonstrance 1, along with every other member of the majority party. This measure calls for the resignation of the St. Louis circuit attorney, citing a high turnover rate in the circuit attorney’s office and the office’s prosecution rate. Stopping crime and protecting citizens are duties of state and local government, and I believe the circuit attorney and the city of St. Louis have failed their duty.
