Senator Karla May Pre-files “Right to Life” Red Flag Legislation

JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Karla May, D-St. Louis, announces she has pre-filed a red flag bill, calling it “Right to Life” legislation. Senate Bill 33 establishes an extreme risk order of protection that will allow the court to restrain an individual from possessing a firearm if a law enforcement officer or agency can prove by a preponderance of evidence that the individual poses an immediate and significant danger to him or herself or others. Under the legislation, the individual does have the ability to file a petition to modify or remove the order of protection.

“This bill is my top priority for the upcoming session,” Sen. May said. “The right to life should extend all the way from the cradle to the grave. Recently, our community experienced a heart wrenching tragedy, losing two precious individuals in the school shooting at CVPA High School. We can do more to keep guns out of the hands of violent criminals, such as passing red flag laws, and this legislation can help ensure these individuals cannot harm themselves or others. I look forward to discussing this important issue and working with my fellow senators to send this legislation to the governor’s desk.”

December 1 was the first day legislators could pre-file bills for the upcoming legislative session, which begins on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
