Happy Halloween The weather has finally turned to fall accompanied by crisp air and the changing color of the leaves. Missourians are once again celebrating one of the finest and most lighthearted holidays of the year - Halloween. This is a holiday celebrating our sense of community. It relies on the goodness of others and our inner child. From the decorations to trunk or treat events to simply door knocking, this holiday is an excellent way to strengthen the spirit of our local communities.
At its heart, Halloween is about connection. Regardless of whether you are taking children trick or treating or providing sought-after candy, for one night, neighborhoods come alive and families walk their neighborhoods, knocking on neighbors’ doors. This holiday is full of smiles and breathless children, excitedly dragging their parents to just one more house.
During this holiday we can build a shared sense of belonging with our neighbors. This is especially important in the modern, isolated world of screens, devices and sharp political debates that serve to divide us. For one night we can be reminded we are all members of one community. We can share in the simple joy of watching kids dress up and say ‘Trick or Treat’ with spooky grins on their faces.
This holiday spotlights what makes our nation great. For one night, we all take part in helping spark children’s imagination and joy. We all take part in making this celebration memorable for ourselves and our children, through the decorations we put up and the costumes we wear, and, most importantly, by simply turning on the porch light and offering a smile alongside some hard-earned candy to any spooky visitors who come knocking.
