Labor Day

Each year, Labor Day gives us more than just the closing of summer. It is a moment to pause and honor the hard work and perseverance of the American worker, and the effort they have put into building their community. Whether it be the farmer and rancher who wake before dawn, the teacher preparing children for the future or the small business owner chasing a dream and persevering, Labor Day is about recognizing the dignity of a day’s work and the entrepreneurial spirit of the American people.

Missouri is defined by the determination of its residents. Generations of men and women before us cleared the land, built businesses and raised families on the edge of the frontier amidst the wilderness. Today, that same commitment to honest work lives on in every corner of this great state. We are still a people bent on the determination that through hard work we can make tomorrow brighter than today.

While we celebrate the hard work of Missouri workers, we should also celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that lives strong in Missouri. This is a state full of small businesses started around a kitchen table or a garage workshop, based on nothing more than a dream and a bold desire to take a chance. That courage to take risks, to innovate, to work through the hard times, powers our economy. It is the beating heart of our state.

As your state senator, I believe it is important to ensure Missouri continues to be a place where hard work is rewarded and where businesses, both big and small, can grow to their fullest potential. This Labor Day let’s take time to celebrate not only a day off and the traditional end of summer, but also the spirit of determination, perseverance and ingenuity that defines Missouri – a state built through the sweat and tears of working people. I am confident that same spirit will continue to guide us to a greater tomorrow.
