The State Fair This past week, Sedalia hosted the Missouri State Fair. This important event is an opportunity for the people of Missouri to celebrate our state and most importantly, honor our farmers and ranchers. The agriculture industry in Missouri is crucial to the state’s economy and way of life. This is especially true for those of us who do not live in the major urban areas. As a rancher myself, I understand the hard work that goes into working the land to produce the food that fuels our nation and the world.
With nearly 95,000 farms in Missouri, we boast one of the highest number of operations in the nation. The vast majority of these farms are family-owned and operated. These farms cover more than 28 million acres, representing almost two-thirds the state’s total land area. These farming operations are famous the world over for the production of soybeans, corn, turkeys, hogs and cattle. However, Missouri is not limited to row crops and livestock. Rice and cotton are also harvested down in the boot heel. These combined agricultural operations are a driving force behind Missouri’s economy. Agriculture and its related industries generate tens of billions of dollars in economic activity and support numerous jobs across the state. From the production of farming equipment, food processing and transportation of crops, all the way to the industry-leading research massively improving crop yields, the ripple effect of agriculture touches every corner of the state. The work of a farmer or rancher is never truly done. It starts early in the day and does not end till late at night. Running cattle has taught me about the responsibility and focus needed to take care of your animals’ health and wellbeing. Cultivating crops has impressed upon me how much effort is required, as well as the pride generated, to produce a harvest capable of feeding our fellow man. The Missouri State Fair is a great opportunity to highlight the vital role agriculture plays in our state, as well as the men and women who toil to put food on our tables. From the different agriculture buildings to livestock and crop competitions, it is a fun and unique way to see agriculture up close. It serves as a vital platform to educate, celebrate and promote farming and ranching. Please feel free to contact my office at 573-751-2076.
