DeVerne Lee Calloway Award

March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the contributions of women to our history, culture and society. As a member of the Women Legislators of Missouri, I would like to encourage you to nominate a woman who you feel is deserving for the prestigious DeVerne Lee Calloway Award. Established in 1993 to honor the memory of DeVerne Lee Calloway, the Missouri General Assembly’s first female, African American member, this award is presented annually to a Missouri woman who has made major contributions to equality and justice for all Missourians.

DeVerne Calloway dedicated her life, including nine terms in the Missouri House of Representatives, to putting people first. She worked tirelessly to increase aid to public education; improve welfare grants and services for dependent children, people with disabilities and the elderly; and reform prisons.

Submit your nominee’s name, address, phone number and email to cheri.toalson-reisch@house.mo.gov by 5:00 p.m. on March 15. Be sure to include the reason for nominating that individual. Women currently serving in the General Assembly cannot be nominated. Any woman whose name has been submitted previously but who has not been selected as the honoree may be nominated again. This award will be presented by the Women Legislators of Missouri at a reception on April 8. If you have any questions, please call 573-751-1169.

Women Legislators of Missouri Scholarship

College tuition is expensive, but scholarships can help ease the burden. The Women Legislators of Missouri will be offering 16 $1,000 scholarships to female, graduating seniors in Missouri who have demonstrated excellence in leadership, academics and community service. The deadline to submit an application and a 500-word essay is March 22. Interested students can call 573-751-9760 for more information.

Lieutenant Governor’s Senior Service Award

Celebrate a senior citizen in your life by nominating them for a 2024 Lieutenant Governor’s Senior Service Award. This award promotes and highlights the positive contributions Missouri’s senior citizens provide their local communities. Nominees should be Missourians, male or female, who are at least 60 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 25 hours per year. Nominations will be accepted until April 1 at ltgov.mo.gov/senior-service-award-nominations/. If you have any questions, please contact Gabby Picard at Gabrielle.Picard@ltgov.mo or 573-751-4727.
